Frequently Asked Questions
What types of musicians or instruments is the band looking for?
The Twin Tiers Community Band is a concert band. so we are interested in any band instrument. General classes of instrumentation include brass, woodwind and percussion (sorry, no strings).
Do I have to audition or perform to join the TTCB?
Absolutely not! Since we play a lot of different music during rehearsals, sight reading skills are helpful, but not essential. You will find that if you are playing at a beginner's level, there will be someone in your section willing to help you if you need it.
What seat or chair will I play if I join the band?
We prefer each band section to work out its own seating assignment. We understand that some members may have a preference for playing second or third parts. If it becomes absolutely necessary, seat assignments will be made by Diane, but we prefer that this be a matter of last resort. At the same time, we encourage all sections to experiment and try rotating parts--you never know when you might be asked to be moved up to cover for a musician who can't make a performance. You will also find that in some arrangements, parts are doubled, or certain parts are not even written.
When and where do you rehearse?
The Twin Tiers Community Band usually rehearses on Saturday mornings between 9:00 a.m and 11:00 a.m. at Ritchie Hall in Bradford, PA (15 St. Francis Dr.). See the Rehearsal Tab for details. Rehearsals are generally weekly when preparing for our summer or Christmas concerts, but are held less frequently when the concert schedule is light, or when holidays and vacations interfere. We like to see as many musicians as possible at rehearsals, but attendance is not mandatory. If you are the only musician reading from your folder, you are welcome to take it with you to practice at home. If you share your folder, you are welcome to take what music you need for practice if the other person sharing the folder does not also need it.
Are there any financial requirements?
There are no membership dues or fees for TTCB. We expect musicians to provide their own instruments, and prefer that members also provide their own music stand. The band does not have a uniform per se, but we generally wear black pants or skirts with white shirts for our concerts.
What about my vacation or personal schedule?
As stated above, participation in any performance or rehearsal is entirely voluntary. If a concert or rehearsal conflicts with your personal plans, we will respect your absence.
